Creative Concepts

image992

“Shilpa's portrayal of the Sita swayamvara in the devaranama, Adigo baruthihane Sri Rama (raagamaalika), had a fresh feel to it despite the tag of being commonplace; in her hands it remained ‘commonplace’ only at the surface level, her stately denouement making it a new experience.”

- Jyothi Raghuraman, Narthaki.com

Shilpa is touted as a ‘thinking dancer’ by the fraternity. And rightly so, as she has constantly reworked themes on existing choreographies, challenged interpretations of traditional texts and has breathed fresh depictions into age old modules of presentations. Her creative pursuits have been noticed by the State and Central Governments and also by various private organisations and curators of Art. Some of her creative pursuits thus far include:

  • Was one of the first few dancers to take her art online and conducted a live telecast of ‘Experiments with Dance’- an interactive project to rethink the adaptation of a traditional ‘Varnam’ for the small screen. This was a very well received endeavour by dance lovers and scholars of dance alike
  • Conceptualised, choreographed and performed ‘Nandi- not just a Vahana’, which was commissioned by ICCR, Govt. of India, for Horizon Series
  • Structured, Choreographed and performed ‘Pushpa Astram’- as a part of ‘Divya Trilogy’ series- conceptualised and curated by India’s leading Arts Impresario, Dr. Usha RK (presently the Director of JNCC, Moscow)
  • Co-conceptualised, choreographed and presented ‘Maanini- power of a woman through the journey of motherhood’, which was commissioned by ICCR, Govt. of India, for Horizon Series
  • Wrote and musically composed a Thillana in Kodava language, which describes the harvest festival of ‘Puthari’, celebrated by Kodavas
